A follow-up Vonnegut quote:

"Here is a lesson in creative writing.
First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college."

B-but...but I liiiiiike semicolons!

In all seriousness, I do think semicolons have their uses. They can join together two related sentences while allowing each clause to retain the punchiness that would be lost by conjoining them with an "and." Semicolons are also one of many useful tools for achieving variety in sentence structure and sentence length. I'll have to respectfully disagree with Vonnegut on this one.
